As we sleep, our North American bats are devouring a whole host of insects that in large numbers can impact our natural and cultivated lands. The United States Geological Survey estimates bats save the economy over 3 billion dollars a year on pest control. These night time flyers find themselves challenged by insecticides, land clearing, and since the winter of 2006-07 White Nose Syndrome. This fungal disease, thought to be brought over from Europe to the Hailes Caves in Eastern U.S.A. on the footwear of hikers, has spread to other caves and has caused the death of millions of bats. White Nose Syndrome has now been detected on the west coast making it even more important to learn about and share information on the significance of bats in a healthy ecosystem.
As a wildlife artist, educator, and bat ambassador I care deeply for our natural world. Bats, like other species, need to be understood and appreciated for their important role in a vibrant working ecosystem.
I have created 4 bat prints for sale, with 50 - 60 % of the proceeds going towards GOT BATS! http://bcbats.ca, to help in bat education, protection, and research.
For more information on bats and ways to help; read some books on bats, checkout local and international websites.
Thank-you for caring about bats!
